Director Douglas Sirk excelled at character-driven movies with emotional complexity and depth, and "Battle Hymn," from 1957, is no exception. Based on a true story, Rock Hudson Col. Dean Hess, a WWII pilot who accidentally bombed a German orphanage. After serving as a minister, he rejoins the Air Force after the outbreak of the Korean War, and atones for his past by building an orphanage. Soon, though, he finds that to ensure the children's safety, he has to fight and kill again. Along with Sirk's direction, Rock Hudson's nuanced performance makes "Battle Hymn" memorable.
